Shupatto Belt-Free Closing Umbrella

No-strap folding umbrella

A lot of rain means a lot of umbrellas, which means a lot of umbrella-related innovations: it's raining about one day in three in Japan so locals have learned a thing or two about umbrellas, and they went on to teach the world a few things about them too with the most famous, transparent vinyl umbrella. And now Marna, a company that has been around since 1872, has managed to make many heads in the brolly world turn with the Shupatto Belt-Free Closing Umbrella, whose innovative concept won it the 2024 Good Design Award!

What's the innovation that makes the Shupatto Belt-Free Closing Umbrella so special? It's a special new mechanism that allows the umbrella to fold without the need for a strap or to fold the material with your hands: you just close it and the folding happens automatically, allowing you to keep your hands dry! And as if that wasn't enough, you can get it in two sizes (with an 100 cm / 3.3 ft or 112 cm / 3.7 ft diameter) and 10 different colors, six for the smaller version and four for the bigger!
