Penguin Carton Opener

What is the role of design if not to make our everyday life less mundane, more imaginative, and, if possible, more playful while at the same time making the objects in it more functional, more efficient, and more productive? Despite its very simple use, the Penguin Carton Opener is all these things. This is only to be expected because the man who created it, Yohei Oki from Tokyo, is one of the most talented and award-winning designers of his generation!

By giving it a penguin shape and matching its contours to that of the human hand, Oki managed to provide an object you seldom think about, an opener for corrugated cardboard boxes, with a firm identity. At the same time, by offering this unique shape in two types, one brass and one plastic, and with five colors (gold for the brass and black, white, red, and blue for the plastic type), he made the Penguin Carton Opener into something much more than a tool: an object that gives character to your desk, reminding you that even a simple job like opening boxes can be special!
