Hana Koma Flower Spinning Tops

The Edo period (1600-1868) was the time that shaped Japan as we know it now, especially when it comes to entertainment, from sumo to geisha, kabuki, and puppet theater. Pretty much everything started during those times and that includes street arts like juggling. One of the most popular juggling props were spinning tops, or koma, and the street performers of Edo (old Tokyo) could do amazing things with them. One of which you can replicate with the Hana Koma Flower Spinning Tops!

Handmade by traditional artisans, the Hana Koma Flower Spinning Tops are a set of three specially designed tops with a hollow side and a base shaped like a flower vase. The base contains three thin rods and each rod supports one top. The trick is to try to make all three tops stay spinning at the same time. Because of the angles involved, this is possible but it takes a certain finesse. And when they stop spinning, the tops stay on rods like flowers on their stems – hence the name Hana Koma, literally meaning "flower spinning tops"!
