Warosoku Mame Candles

Traditional Japanese mini candles

Shaped like a reverse cone and with a brighter flame thanks to their thick wick, much less smoke, a different kind of smell (because they only use plant-based materials), and a characteristic sound, traditional Japanese candles (warosoku) are one of the lesser known but very respected crafts in Japan. Though most readiily identified with religious ceremonies, the Warosoku Mame Candles proves that this superb and colorful aspect of Japanese culture is perfect for a domestic setting too.

The Warosoku Mame Candles come in four different sets, all offering 10 45 mm (1.8") mini candles. The "mame" means "bean" but also "tiny," which is what these candles are. There is an all-white set, an all-red set, and two multicolored sets (one with bright colors and one with quieter, more earthly ones). The shape is the classic vase-like one typical of warosoku and so is the material, which is wax made of rice bran. Each candle burns for about 15 minutes, long enough to allow you to appreciate its light, sound, and smell and see for yourself why they are something more than your average candles!
