Yamaneen Sakura Tea

Cherry blossom flavor tea

Tea in a Japanese context usually means green tea, especially the thick, bitter matcha used in the tea ceremony and as a flavor in desserts. But the truth is that like Westerners, the Japanese call several beverages tea, including some rather exotic ones that have nothing to do with the Camellia sinensis tea plant. The Yamaneen Sakura Tea is one such beverage made from that other iconic example of Japanese flora: the cherry tree!

Made of 100% natural, salt-pickled Yaezakura cherry blossom, one of the most common species all over Japan, the Yamaneen Sakura Tea is even easier to make than regular tea: just throw a pinch in a cup of hot water and after a minute, you have a beverage that is as soothing to the body as it is pleasing to the eye with the unfolding cherry blossom petals. It's the creation of the tea shop Yamaneen in Tokyo's Sugamo area, comes in a 40 g (1.4 oz) bag, and because of its salty taste, can also be used in cooking to add a special umami accent to your food!
