Space Invaders Edo Kiriko Glass

Classic arcade game theme traditional cut-glass drinkware

What is Japan if not a land of contradictions? On the one hand, you have traditions going back hundreds of years and on the other, new pop culture appearing every moment, and in a way this all manages to blend seamlessly together and create results that would be unheard of in other cultures. Take the Space Invaders Edo Kiriko Glass, for example: where else would a traditional craft like cut glass with a history of over two centuries be used to celebrate a video game that launched in the 1970s?

Because this is exactly what the Space Invaders Edo Kiriko Glass is: Tokyo craftspeople who have been perfecting the art of cut glass since the Edo period (1600-1868) were hired to create a unique glass to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Space Invaders, one of the most iconic arcade games of all times. The style is called Edo Kiriko. The craftspeople have used this technique to depict the alien monsters coming to invade Earth in amazing detail on the sides of the glass. Available in strictly limited numbers, this 8 x 8 cm (3.1 x 3.1") glass comes in a special commemorative wooden box!
