Seto Ware Maneki-neko Calico Cat

The maneki-neko is one of those reminders that no matter how futuristic it can sometimes seem, Japan still has its one foot (or should that be paw?) firmly planted in the past: a ceramic doll of a calico cat sitting in the entrance of restaurants and other shops with its front left paw raised in the air. The name means "beckoning cat" and according to a folk belief going back to the Edo period (1600-1868), such a cat brings customers to the shop.
