Seto Ware Maneki-neko Calico Cat

Ceramic beckoning cat talisman

The maneki-neko is one of those reminders that no matter how futuristic it can sometimes seem, Japan still has its one foot (or should that be paw?) firmly planted in the past: a ceramic doll of a calico cat sitting in the entrance of restaurants and other shops with its front left paw raised in the air. The name means "beckoning cat" and according to a folk belief going back to the Edo period (1600-1868), such a cat brings customers to the shop. Even if you don't have a restaurant, though, the Seto Ware Maneki-neko Calico Cat will certainly add a very Japanese note to your space!

But this isn't a regular maneki-neko: the colors are there and so is the red collar with the golden bell around its neck. The style of the 23.5 cm (9.3") tall Seto Ware Maneki-neko Calico Cat, however, is unique: it dates back to the mid-19th century and the mix of the traditional Seto-yaki pottery style, one of Japan's six ancient kilns with plaster mold techniques that came from Europe when Japan opened its borders to the world. More lifelike than the standard maneki-neko, this is a true objet d'art for the discerning lover of classic Japan!
