Yawataya Shichimi Togarashi Chili Pepper Blend

Traditional Japanese spice mix and shaker

Back in the Edo period (1600-1868), pilgrims who traveled around the country brought souvenirs from their trips. One of the most common souvenirs were shichimi togarashi spice mixes. The traditional way of selling them was in containers shaped like gourds because they were considered auspicious (and therefore drew the eye of customers), and because they would protect the spices from humidity. So when you get a Yawataya Shichimi Togarashi Chili Pepper Blend, you aren't just getting a novelty item but a piece of Japanese culinary history!

The company that produces the 8 g (0.3 oz) of Yawataya Shichimi Togarashi Chili Pepper Blend knows all about the spice mix and its containers: they have been around since 1736, back when shichimi togarashi was still sold in actual gourds. The blend has all seven spices (chili pepper, chinpi, sesame, hemp seeds, shisho, Japanese pepper, and ginger), mixed together according to Yawataya's traditional recipe. And with the mix comes a 8 x 4.7 cm (3.1 x 1.9") gourd-shaped container in red or black for added authenticity!
