Kyukyoku Ultimate Onigiri Maker

Rice ball preparation device

It took the recent unprecedented rush of inbound tourism for the world to understand that beyond sushi, tempura, and ramen, there's one thing no Japanese can resist – and it's not even a whole dish! It's the onigiri rice balls filled with fish and vegetables (and nowadays also meat), and shaped like triangles so they can be arranged neatly on the shelves of supermarkets and convenience stores all over Japan. There's a knack to making a good onigiri, though, and that is that the rice must be hot. The Kyukyoku Ultimate Onigiri Maker is here to help you overcome the obvious problem of how to handle it!

The Kyukyoku Ultimate Onigiri Maker comprises two parts: the onigiri mold (yes, it is triangular!) and the, for lack of a better word, spinner. What you do is put half the rice you want to use (about 40-50 g, 1.4-1.8 oz) in the bottom part of the mold, then the filling and other half of the rice, and finally the lid. Now comes the fun part: you put the mold in the spinner and turn it on for about 30 seconds: the spinner, well, spins it to give your onigiri the perfect shape that otherwise you would need to burn your hands to achieve!
