It is used as soil for bonsai trees but this is not the only thing the Japanese do with diatomaceous earth, the soft natural rock that contains the fossilized remains of a hard shell species of microscopic algae called diatoms: thanks to its granularity and abrasiveness, diatomaceous earth can be used for everything from toothpaste to metal polishing substances, and is also suitable for skin-scrubbing. And if it's high quality, like the diatomaceous earth used for the Karuishi Pumice Stone, it completely removes the dead cells and rejuvenates your skin!
Despite the name, the 67 x 47 mm (2.6 x 1.9") Karuishi Pumice Stone is not made of actual pumice but of Japanese diatomaceous earth, so it has all the abrasive properties plus a finer grain that makes it gentler on the skin. It absorbs water as well as bad odors and comes with a string that you can use as a wrist strap when exfoliating, or as a loop for hanging the stone when you are done. And to be perfectly safe, it contains no asbestos whatsoever.
