Tama Noren Bead Doorway Curtain Single Curve

Traditional Japanese space divider

Noren, the cloth curtains restaurants in Japan use to show they are open for business, are as much part of the Japanese urban landscape as red lanterns or sliding doors. If you go to the city of Ono in Hyogo prefecture, however, you will see a different type of noren that isn't used in the outside of buildings but on the inside as curtains or space dividers. The Tama Noren Bead Doorway Curtain Single Curve is one such type of noren and a fitting tribute to the legacy of Japanese craftsmanship.

Measuring 85 x 55 cm (2.8 x 1.8 ft), the Tama Noren Bead Doorway Curtain Single Curve is made of maple wood beads finished with polyurethane to last longer. Why beads? Because with Ono being Japan's abacus capital since the 17th century, there are there dozens of craftspeople who can make beads in any kind of shape and combination. Just take a look at this noren's beautiful wavy shape rendered in beige or brown beads and you'll immediately understand that it can only have come from the hands of a master!
