Casting iron has been a major craftsmanship tradition in Yamagata Prefecture for 1,000 years. It has been such a big part of the area that it has become an independent style called Yamagata casting and even today, some of Japan's best cast iron items from teapots to temple bells are created using this particular technique in the area called Domachi. The Nippon Kodo Marugata Kohai Incense Stand is one such item from Chushin Kobo, the workshop of master designer and craftsman Hisanori Masuda. It will change the whole way you perceive an incense stand!
The Nippon Kodo Marugata Kohai Incense Stand measures about 55 x 105 x 105 mm (2.2 x 4.1 x 4.1") but weighs about 404 g (14.3). The reason is, of course, that it's made of cast iron in the finest Yamagata casting tradition. Its center features a red circle finished in red with three holes, each holding a incense stick. This means you can burn up to three sticks at a time and since it's shaped like a cup, it also collects the ashes, keeping the area around the stand clean. Artistry meets function and tradition meets innovation in this fabulous piece that stands out in any space even without the incense!
