Five-Ball Kendama

Increased-difficulty traditional juggling toy

Juggling is one of Japan's finest traditions, going back to the Edo period (1600-1868) and the chomin (townspeople) culture of the big cities like Edo (Tokyo's predecessor), Osaka, and Kyoto. The toy that has become synonymous with Japanese juggling, the kendama, only became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and even more so in the 21st century and the era of YouTube. As a matter of fact, it became so popular that people started looking for more challenging versions of it – like the Five-Ball Kendama!

Created by Yamagata Koubou, the top kendama manufacturer in Japan, and in collaboration with the Akimoto Kendama Lab, the Five-Ball Kendama is a 30 cm (11.8") rod with five kendama with two cups each and five balls, each in a different color. There is no grip, so the juggling must be done using the cups themselves, which makes the whole thing much more challenging! More than the regular kendama, it demands better balance and skill, and ultimate levels of coordination. If you're serious about your kendama game, here's your chance to prove it!
