Seto Ware Maneki-neko Gray Tabby Cat

Ceramic beckoning cat talisman

Maneki-neko, a calico Japanese Bobtail sitting on its hind legs and with its (usually) left front paw raised, is a common sight in shops all over Japan. The feline is supposed to beckon to customers to come in (and that's what its name means: the cat that beckons). The Seto Ware Maneki-neko Gray Tabby Cat is one such feline ornament but in a design quite different from the conventional style. The reason? It has been made with Aichi Prefecture's traditional Seto-yaki pottery in a style that was very fashionable in the late 19th century.

Handmade using the same technique that combines classic Seto-yaki with European plaster molding, the Seto Ware Maneki-neko Gray Tabby Cat is 9 x 5 x 5 cm (3.5 x 2 x 2") and more detailed and realistic than the usual calico maneki-neko you get in Japanese souvenir shops. The ornament comes in two designs, with either the left or the right hand raised. According to folklore, the left hand beckons people and the right brings in money!
