Wooden Oshogatsu Kagami Mochi

Since New Year's Day is their big winter holiday (Christmas is a regular working day in Japan), the Japanese put up numerous decorations to welcome the new year and say farewell to the old. If you are not sure which to get to greet the new year in a Japanese way, the safest bet is a pair of kagami mochi, two round rice cakes (one small and one big – think of a flattened snowman!), on a wooden dais called a sanpo, and topped by a daidai bitter orange. Which is exactly what the Wooden Oshogatsu Kagami Mochi is but with one difference: you don't need to eat it after the holidays!
