Daruma roly-poly dolls are one of the most common sights anywhere in Japan. They are supposed to symbolize the founder of Zen Buddhism who lost his legs after years of meditation but also express persistence and perseverance against life's hardships. Could there be a better symbol for the struggle of the athletes in the world's biggest sports events? The answer is "no" and this is why the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Gunma Prefecture Sakura Daruma Doll has a special place in the Games official merchandise lineup.

It isn't just that, though: the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Gunma Prefecture Sakura Daruma Doll has also been included because it is the most famous product of the craftspeople of the city of Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture. A temple there, aptly named Shorinzan Daruma-ji, is supposed to be the birthplace of the doll, so by using it as Olympic merchandise (with Tokyo 2020 insignia and logo, Olympic rings logo and all), this papier-mâché and clay doll is a great showcase of Gunma's acclaimed folk art. The daruma doll comes in a sakura (cherry blossom) pink and with its eyeballs unpainted (so you can paint one when you set a goal and the other when you have achieved it).
