Shaun the Sheep Daruma

Animation character version of traditional Japanese doll

Daruma, the red roly-poly dolls started as a winter side jobs for farmers in Gunma Prefecture's Takasaki have become one of the symbols of Japan and bought as souvenirs even by tourists who don't know their back story, their alleged relationship with the founder of Zen Buddhism from whom they take their name, or the custom of painting one of their eyes when you set a goal and the second when you achieve it. In fact, they have become so popular that they can now be found with all kinds of faces, and the Shaun the Sheep Daruma is the proof!

Yes, Shaun the Sheep Daruma is a Daruma-shaped doll with the face of Shaun the Sheep from the popular British animation series. The Daruma's usual red color has been changed to white to fit Shaun's look better. Its bottom half has the bracket-shaped lines also characteristic of Daruma dolls and in the middle is the character "fuku," which means good luck in Japanese. And while it looks very simple in shape, this 60 x 60 x 73 mm (2.4 x 2.4 x 2.9") dogwood doll comes from the workshop of Usaburo Kokeshi, a traditional Gunma Prefecture doll maker based about eight miles from Daruma's place of birth!
