Suwada Flower Shears

High-quality garden clippers

The art of creating flower compositions and preparing and serving powdered matcha green tea (ikebana and sado, respectively) have been for centuries considered the quintessence of Japanese aesthetics, especially for women. For men, it was the martial arts, calligraphy (shodo), and, oddly enough, poetry. Even today, the work of famous ikebana masters can be found as decorations anywhere from station toilets to the Imperial Palace. Ikebana is taught from private studios to community halls. Hence the need for high-quality cutting tools like the Suwada Flower Shears!

Made by a company in Niigata Prefecture specializing in cutting equipment since the mid-1920s, the Suwada Flower Shears come in the standard shape of the scissors/clippers used in ikebana but with some improvements like special notches for positioning the index fingers. Together with the large elongated rings that are the trademark of ikebana scissors, these allow better control of the blades and make the 170 mm (6.7") carbon-steel shears easier to use for cutting, pruning, and trimming – even if you are not doing ikebana!
