Yokohama Happi Coat

Local festival overcoat

Happi coats are mainly associated with Japanese festivals: people who participate in the festival wear them and most happi feature brightly colored images and names from the participant's local area. In the case of the Yokohama Happi Coat, it's the name of Japan's second biggest city, the most famous port, and the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture.

Made in Yokohama and dyed using a technique called Yokohama Nassen, which became part of the city's culture when its ports opened to foreign trade in 1859 and fabrics and dyeing techniques started arriving from all over the world, the Yokohama Happi Coat comes in two colors (blue and red), and one size that fits almost all adult bodies. A happi is meant to be loose and worn over regular clothes. On the back are the Japanese characters for Yokohama, plus a front with classic marine images evoking the city, one of the most famous ports in Japan!
