Wooden Reversi

High-quality woodwork board game

People find it very natural for a chess set to be a work of art or an exquisite piece of craftsmanship, and indeed some such sets are even museum pieces. But the idea that the same could be true for a simple game like Reversi seems a little strange because not everybody shares the Japanese approach to design and working with natural materials. And especially when the designer is at the level of Tadahito Ishibashi, who created the Wooden Reversi, then the results are nothing short of spectacular!

Using only natural walnut and birch from Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island and home to some of its thickest woods and best lumber, Ishibashi-sensei came up with a beautiful 8 x 8 board where each square is actually a concavity in which the lens-shaped pieces fit perfectly. As the players take turns in reversing the pieces, the two different colored wooden pieces create amazing organic patterns, making the 330 x 330 x 28 mm (13 x 13 x 1") Wooden Reversi a splendid decorative ornament as well as a game set. And when you are done playing, you can store the pieces in the equally masterfully designed wooden case it comes with.
