Wooden Hinamatsuri Dolls Set

Every year on March 3, families who have daughters celebrate a special day called Hinamatsuri (Doll's Day or Girls' Day), which aims to wish the little (and not so little!) girls a healthy and happy life. The main part of this celebration is exhibiting a set of Hina dolls, which show a wedding between two members of the Japanese aristocracy back in the Heian period (8th to 12th century). The dolls can be as few as two or as many as twelve and their main characteristic is their amazing emphasis to detail. But the Wooden Hinamatsuri Dolls Set is a collection of Hina dolls that approaches the custom in a very different way!

There are sets available here: one features the two main dolls (the newlyweds) and another with five dolls (the newlyweds and the three court ladies serving them sake). These dolls are more minimalist and geometrical in their design than usual and can be taken apart and put back together again. The reason is that they have been created not as ornaments but as practical toys for young children to actually use them. The dolls are made from 100% natural Japanese wood (hinoki cypress, tamo ash, and buna beech) and their pedestals can be used as storage boxes until the next Hinamatsuri – or the next play date!
