Soap made of tea? Yes, says Wamuu, a shop on the road leading to Byodoin temple in Uji, near Kyoto, that has been in the area for around a century. It's the Uji Matcha Soap. Should you take their word for it? Well, for starters, Uji people know their green tea: the best matcha tea used in the tea ceremony in Japan and all over the world comes from there, so the area has a deep understanding of Japan's magic plant and its numerous uses. And the moment you try it, you'll see that they have gotten this right!
Wamuu's Uji Matcha Soap is essentially two things: Uji green tea and horse oil. Thanks to the latter's lipids that are similar to those in human's, horse oil can make dirt from sebum dissolve easily. The green tea gives the soap a scrubbing effect that results in even deeper cleansing. What makes it even more effective, though, is its amazingly rich foam: using the lather net that comes with the soap (which is available in two sizes: 100 g/3.5 oz and 15 g/0.5 oz), you can create a foam that is thick as cream and will spread beautifully on your skin, leaving it really clean!
