Without a doubt, a box of tissues is one of the most pedestrian things you can find in any room: tissues are so expendable that we never think about them or their box. We just keep pulling one until the box is empty and then just open another box. However, this goes against everything traditional Japanese culture stands for! Everything, even the most mundane and short-lived item, can be special or its surroundings can. And "special" is just beginning to describe the Tsuyuki Woodworking Inlay Tissue Holder Ichimatsu!
The check pattern you see on the Tsuyuki Woodworking Inlay Tissue Holder Ichimatsu isn't painted on: it's a puzzle made of tiny squares of different woods, arranged in the yosegi-zaiku marquetry style that is a traditional woodworking craft going back centuries in Kanagawa Prefecture's Hakone area near Mount Fuji. Finished with urethane paint to make it more durable and more resistant to moisture and even the occasional splash, this 13.5 x 27 x 9 cm (5.3 x 10.6 x 3.5") cover houses any regular box of tissues and also makes a wonderful decorative ornament!
