Tokugawa Art Museum Indigo Armor Pouch

Samurai museum shop travel accessory

The Tokugawa clan is one of the most famous in Japan because it produced the dynasty that ruled the country as shogun (military leader) from 1603 until 1868. Among other things, the Tokugawa were responsible for making Tokyo the capital of Japan by choosing its castle as their base. A major branch of the Tokugawa clan was based in Nagoya, though, and this is where the Tokugawa Art Museum is located. The Tokugawa Art Museum Indigo Armor Pouch comes from the museum's official shop and is a perfect example of how the past can inspire the future!

Using colors and patterns from one of the most spectacular sets of armor in the museum collection, silk artisans from the Nishijin area of Kyoto have created the pouch exterior. The armor's cuirass (chest protector) features a bright orange circle symbolizing the sun, set against an indigo background. These elements have been transferred onto a practical pouch, giving it a unique look. At about 11 x 17 x 6 cm (4.3 x 6.7 x 2.4"), it's perfect for holding your makeup accessories or small electronics, helping you organize your bag, backpack, and daily life!
