Theo Jansen's Mini Strandbeest

Wind-powered kinetic sculpture kit

The name Strandbeest does not sound Japanese and indeed, it isn't: it's Dutch, as is the man who came up with it, the artist and physicist Theo Jansen, who for the last 35 years has been designing and building machines capable of moving by themselves, powered by the wind and the principles of physics. If you think that all this sounds like a great idea, the original Strandbeest (which means "beach beast") can now be yours with the Theo Jansen's Mini Strandbeest!

There is a difference, though: the real Strandbeest is much bigger than the one you can build with Theo Jansen's Mini Strandbeest, which is probably a good thing since very few among us have enough room to hold the original and make it move. Jansen usually sets them off on long beaches, where they can move freely. Just using regular household tools you already have like a pair of scissors and a box cutter, you can make your own fully working Strandbeest and even combine it with the Theo Jansen’s Uminami (sold separately) for even more breathtaking action!
