It was in 1990 that Dutch artist Theo Jansen came up with the idea to build large machines made of PVC capable of moving on their own using the wind and physics. He called them Strandbeest (beach beast). As you might expect with its tradition of kaiju monsters and mecha machines, Japan immediately welcomed the idea of a strange creature that can walk by itself. Jansen's kinetic sculptures became popular enough to spawn their own miniature kits: the Theo Jansen's Mini Rhinoceros is one such example.
Unlike the original Strandbeest rhinoceros, which is actually bigger than the pachyderm it takes its name from, the Theo Jansen's Mini Rhinoceros can fit on your coffee table as soon as you assemble the pieces in the kit. Using some common tools like a pair of scissors and a box cutter, you are able to create a Strandbeest of your own, which will catch the wind and walk as if it were alive!
