The Kyoto Kibamusha Emaki Nishijin-ori Cushion Cover

Traditional weave and design inspired by Kyoto

They are mostly associated with the sword but the truth is that the samurai, the medieval warriors that played a dominant role in Japanese history from the 12th until the 19th centuries, were for the most part mounted archers. Especially if you go back to the Kamakura and early Muromachi periods, the horse, bow, and arrow were considered the true symbols of the samurai, hence the word kibamusha (mounted warrior) when referring to them. Yes, the same mounted warriors who appear on the Kyoto Kibamusha Emaki Nishijin-ori Cushion Cover!

The Kyoto Kibamusha Emaki Nishijin-ori Cushion Cover is a 45 x 45 cm (17.7 x 17.7") canvas on which Kyoto artisans have created images of Kamakura-era mounted samurai. The motif is a senior samurai on a white horse surrounded by five other mounted warriors, all behind a line of shields to protect them from enemy arrows. What makes this cushion cover unique is that the technique used to weave it is a traditional craft of Kyoto called Nishijin-ori that has been used for centuries to create spectacular items like kimono and obi sashes!
