Suzu Apple Tin Flower Vase

Japanese tinware fruit-shaped receptacle

The first thing you notice about the Suzu Apple Tin Flower Vase is the design: it seems familiar from its apple shape, but at the same time somewhat otherworldly (because of the lines running down across its surface); something organic, but also very artificial and designed. All this means that multi-award-winning Tokyo designer Hisae Igarashi has achieved her purpose: to create an object that combines a design that says "nature" with a color and texture that says "futuristic."

At 85 x 94 x 70 mm (3.3 x 3.7 x 2.7"), the vase is 100% tin, a material that the metalworkers in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, have been using since the early 17th century. In other words, what you get here isn't just award-winning design but also part of a craft tradition that has been evolving for hundreds of years and a good reminder that not everything that's beautiful and elegant in Japan comes from Kyoto!
