Ryogokubashi Hokusai Senbei Rice Crackers

Traditional Tokyo snack assortment

There are several things to see in Sumida ward next to the eponymous river in east Tokyo with the Ryogoku Kokugikan sumo arena, the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and the Hokusai Museum dedicated to ukiyo-e master who everyone knows as the artist behind The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Hokusai lived in Sumida and this is the reason another long-term resident of the area, the company Azura Arare, has created the Ryogokubashi Hokusai Senbei Rice Crackers to honor him and offer you a taste of what the great painter probably snacked on!

Azuma Arare isn't as old as Hokusai: he died in 1849 and the company was founded in 1910. But their senbei rice crackers are local specialties that have been around since the Edo period when Hokusai created his pictures, many of which are featured on the Ryogokubashi Hokusai Senbei Rice Crackers. And there are quite a few crackers here: four bags of okaki senbei of four different flavors (salt, tamari soy sauce, shrimp salt, yuzu sugar), and four of age senbei of another three flavors (salt, soy sauce, and curry). So make yourself a cup of green tea (or open a beer: they go great with a cold pint too) and start sampling!
