Even most Japanese might not know what a ranma is, although they have certainly seen them in imperial palaces, temples, or houses of feudal lords and high-ranking samurai: they are transom windows, oblong openings over sliding doors and windows that allow light and breeze into the rooms without having to fully open the doors or windows. Very often, these openings were latticed and this is where the Ranma Latticework Tray draws its inspiration from, bringing to your table a superb sample of this fine craftsmanship.
The technique used for the Ranma Latticework Tray is called kumiko, a type of joinery so precise that the pieces of wood stay in place without the need for nails or glue. It is approximately 130 x 350 x 15 mm (5.1 x 13.8 x 0.6"), features three classic decorative patterns (asanoha hemp leaf, kikko tortoise shell, and goma sesame), is usable on both sides, and is washable, making the tray suitable even for daily use to bring a touch of classic Japan to your breakfast or dining table!
