You can even see it in woodblock prints from the Edo period, back in the 18th and 19th century: a pig-shaped container with smoke coming out of it that was used to drive away mosquitoes. Back in those days, insect repellents were herbs but after the 20th century, those herbs took the form of coils and those pig containers, called kayari-buta, remained in us. The Porco Rosso Mosquito Coil Pig doesn't resemble a regular pig, hence the mustache and sunglasses. It is Marco Pagot, aka Porco Rosso, the eponymous hero of Miyazaki's 1992 film and an Italian former WWI fighter pilot transformed into a human-shaped pig by a curse. Despite its looks, this kayari-buta is a fully functioning mosquito coil container and at 150 x 160 x 150 mm (5.9 x 6.3 x 5.9"), fits pretty much all mosquito coils on the market.
