Leather craftsmanship is rather young in Japan, being mostly postwar, but designers and craftspeople are catching up and nowadays you can find amazing leather items, ranging from clothes to bags, shoes, and accessories. Like the Porco Rosso Leather Key Ring, for example: created and handmade by Tokyo's Ojaga Design, this 70 x 60 x 5 mm (2.8 x 2.4 x 0.2") accessory is such a perfect rendering of Porco Rosso, the lead character from the 1992 Hayao Miyazaki film of the same name, that it could have been made by the director himself!
Against a red background ("rosso" being Italian for red and the color so prominently featured in the film), Ojaga Design's craftspeople have built a portrait of the porcine protagonist in his WWI pilot's helmet, goggles, sunglasses, and white scarf as he flies over the Adriatic Sea. The pieces are layered to make a 3D effect, meaning the Porco Rosso Leather Key Ring really looks and feels alive! A unique piece of Studio Ghibli memorabilia that will become even better as it ages with use.
