Mini Earless Seal Marshmallows

Sea mammal-themed decorative sweets

Hozui are not your typical wagashi Japanese sweets or, at least, that's what everyone thinks when they see these small marshmallows made in specialty shops in Kyoto. The funny thing is, though, that they do indeed have a long pedigree, originating in the Heian period (794–1185), when Kyoto was Japan's capital and also in its heyday as the source of Japanese culture. Thee hozui made back then didn't have cute animals on them: for that to happen, it took about ten centuries but the wait was well worth it: the Mini Earless Seal Marshmallows are nothing short of adorable!

Each of the nine hozui in the Mini Earless Seal Marshmallows box has a face of an earless seal. Combined with the sweet's round shape and the squishy texture of the marshmallow, the result is amazingly cute and you will have a hard time eating it! Don't worry, though: besides being delicious (they're filled with sweet bean jam and chocolate), they are also perfect for decorating any type of dessert from ice creams to cakes and very Japanese ice-cream soda or kakigori shaved ice, which makes them very photogenic and perfect for livening up your social media posts!
