Was there any possibility that a cute rabbit, even one from another culture, wouldn't become popular in Japan? No matter how many of their own the Japanese have, there's always room for one more. In this case, Miffy, the rabbit created by Dutch author, artist, illustrator, and graphic designer Dick Bruna. Whether in specialist shops, of which there are several all over Japan, or in regular shops, Miffy-themed items are everywhere, but once in a while you come across something that is really special – like the Miffy Daruma!
Usaburo Kokeshi's Miffy Daruma is a 58 x 58 x 70 mm (2.73 x 2.3 x 2.8") wooden mix of two things: the Daruma doll, a folk red papier-mâché likeness of the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism, and Dick Bruna's adorable little rabbit. The Japanese regard Daruma dolls as symbols of good fortune and this is why they often buy them at the end of the year to bring luck for the coming year. Even if you don't believe in such things, you will certainly be charmed by this wonderful doll, created by famous Gunma Prefecture doll maker Usaburo Kokeshi!
