Mashiko Ware Earthenware Rice Cooking Pot and Rice
Traditional Tochigi Prefecture pottery rice crock
Since they first appeared in the mid-1950s, electric rice cookers have become a cornerstone of all Japanese kitchens, professional and home alike. But comfort and ease of use come at a cost and according to Japan's gourmets, that cost is the taste of rice, which isn't exactly as it would had been if prepared in the old way, back when earthenware or aluminum pots were used. The Mashiko Ware Earthenware Rice Cooking Pot and Rice is here to offer an alternative approach to modern rice cuisine.
Made in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, the Mashiko Ware Earthenware Rice Cooking Pot and Rice utilizes the local Mashiko-yaki style of pottery that was created during the Edo period (1600–1868) and is among Japan's most fire-resistant. This makes it ideal for use as a 14 x 12.5 cm (5.5 x 4.9") pot that can cook a measure of rice (150 g / 5.3 oz) in the traditional way. What's great about this set is that besides the beautiful pot that comes in white or black, you also get three 300 g (10.6 oz) packs of Tochigi's top rice varieties (Miyaotome Koshihikari, Tochigi no Hoshi, and Yudai), so you can see for yourself how really good rice tastes when cooked in that way!
