Kyugetsu Sword Master Monchhichi

Stuffed monkey toy in traditional kimono

Don't let his smiling face and trademark Monchhichi haircut fool you: the Kyugetsu Sword Master Monchhichi is a real samurai that could very well have been the main character in a kabuki theater play or a jidaigeki samurai film! Yes, the Monchhichi, the stuffed monkey toys that were introduced in 1974, are still popular in Japan and to keep them relevant, their manufacturer gives them new and exciting looks. This sword master version is one of them and is the result of a collaboration with historical doll maker Kyugetsu.

The attention to detail that has been put into Kyugetsu Sword Master Monchhichi is a testament to Kyugetsu's two centuries' worth of experience in dolls wearing traditional outfits. The black kimono with the red and white lining brings to mind Sukeroku, one of Kabuki's most beloved characters, and it even has the crest with the character for "mo" (from Monchhichi) and is accessorized with a green and gold obi sash, also with kabuki-related patterns, and, of course, the katana samurai sword that gives the doll its name!
