Kyugetsu Ittobori Year of the Rabbit Ornament

Traditional Japanese New Year decoration

2023 is the Year of the Rabbit (actually the year of the Water Rabbit, since the twelve zodiac animals in Japan are always paired with the five elements), so from mid-December to late January, wherever you go in Japan you will find images and figurines of rabbits in every conceivable pose. However, if you are looking for a truly unique way to celebrate the first time for this combination in the 21st century (the previous Water Rabbit year was 1963), the Kyugetsu Ittobori Year of the Rabbit Ornament marks the end of your quest!

Hand-carved from one piece of hiba cypress in the traditional technique called Iyo-ittobori from Ehime Prefecture in Shikoku, the Kyugetsu Ittobori Year of the Rabbit Ornament captures the pose of a rabbit as it lands on its front feet after jumping forward. This movement is called hiyaku in Japanese but also has the double meaning of "leaping progress," an inspirational message for the new year. The word "hiyaku" written in calligraphy comes on a wooden plaque that completes the scene, making this ornament an exceptional decoration for 2023.
