Even if you don't know the deep history behind the Kyoro-chan Kakigori Machine, you'll still love it for the cute looks. But if you do know that this is a reissue of a kakigori (traditional shaved ice summer dessert) machine Tiger launched way back in 1978, reproduced in every detail, included the box it comes in, you'll appreciate it even more as a piece of late 20th-century Japanese pop culture. And even more so, because like its esteemed predecessor, this is easy to use and bound to appeal to children because it looks and feels like a toy!
It isn't, though: despite the teddy-bear looks, the bright colors (yellow, orange and blue), and eyes that move left and right when you turn the handle, the 19.4 x 18 x 33.7 cm (7.6 x 7.1 x 13.3") Kyoro-chan Kakigori Machine has a cutter optimized for thickness and angle to offer very effective shaving, and a main cutting unit that can be detached from the bear's body, allowing you to serve the ice directly to the plate or over a dessert or drink. And since it takes ice cubes about 3 cm (1.2") big, it's compatible with the ice you get from most freezers.
