When it comes to shodo, the native art of calligraphy done with brushes, the Japanese use sumi ink sticks they grind on suzuri inkstones or bokuju pre-ground ink. But not all Japanese writing is done with brushes these days and as a matter of fact, the Japanese are also famous for some of the best fountain pens in the world. And since they already knew how to make good ink for their shodo, making good ink for their fountain pens was the next logical step. The Kaneiri Series 8 Original Fountain Pen Ink is one such ink and it is as good as the pens it is made for!
Made in the city of Kanohe in Aomori Prefecture, the Kaneiri Series 8 Original Fountain Pen Ink isn't actually one ink: it is a series of four different colors, each inspired by Kanohe's sights: the black is called Squid Ink because the city is one of Japan's leading fish ports, especially for squid; the blue is Factory Nightscape and refers to the night sky over the city's factory zone; and the green and orange refer to two picturesque spots, Tanesashi Coast and the island of Kabushima. All are water-based, come in 20 ml (0.7 fl oz) bottles, and work with pretty much any fountain pen.
