When Japan opened to the world in 1853, it began in an area of what is now Kanagawa at Yokohama, the prefecture's capital, Japan's second largest city, and one of its biggest ports – and arguably the country's most cosmopolitan. It boasts some of Japan's first attempts to emulate the influences that came from abroad, including soap! Yes, the first Western-style soap made in Japan was made in Yokohama by an entrepreneur called Tsutsumi Isoemon in 1863 and the Isoemon Savon Soap Set is a tribute to his creation!
The Isoemon Savon Soap Set contains three bars of that very first soap, each coming in different boxes that feature artwork from those times reproduced in every detail – colors, fonts, and all. But the 80 g (2.8 oz) bars themselves are also perfect copies of the original soap, including the carvings on it and even the fragrance. The three soaps come in a special box, making the whole thing ideal for a gift to anyone interested in the Meiji period (1868-1912), when Japan and the world were discovering each other.
