Hyotokko and Okame Mask Set

Japanese folk character masks

Japan is known for its sophisticated art but not all Japanese art is like that: hand in hand with the refined poetry and the noh drama of the imperial court go the huge spectacle that is kabuki theater and comic folk performances and dances by characters like Hyotokko and Okame. And as a matter of fact, while there are many Japanese who don't know anything about noh, almost anyone will immediately recognize a Hyotokko and Okame mask – like those in the Hyotokko and Okame Mask Set!

Made in Fukushima Prefecture's Koriyama by an elderly papier-mâché craftsman called Hiroji Hashimoto, the Hyotokko and Okame Mask Set comprises a 150 x 150 x 50 mm (5.9 x 5.9 x 2") mask of the male Hyottoko with the googly eyes and the wrinkled brow, and a 200 x 140 x 70 mm (7.9 x 5.5 x 2.8") mask of the female Okame with the white plump face and the kind smile. They both come with a piece of fabric attached to the back so if you want to put them on and perform some of their comic acts, you will look exactly like a Japanese folk performer!
