That Japan is an unbelievably safe country is best illustrated by the fact that even first graders go to school and back home alone every day, on foot or by train. That doesn't mean, of course, that Japanese parents don't care about their children's safety: they definitely do and they equip them with all kinds of devices to help them in an emergency. The Hello Kitty Children's Emergency Alarm is one such device and despite its cute appearance featuring Japan's (and the world's!) most famous cat, it's very functional and may prove a lifesaver.
Just 190 x 54 x 25 mm (7.5 x 2.1 x 1"), the Hello Kitty Children's Emergency Alarm attaches to almost any backpack. It is powered by three LR44 button-type alkaline batteries and on its upper side even has a reflective surface to add an extra layer of safety when children walk on the street. The only thing you need to teach them is that when they feel they're in any type of danger, they should pull the bottom part: doing this emits a loud (90 dB) sound and the alarm starts flashing, which it keeps on doing for almost 1.5 hours unless reset!
