Goldfish Pond Glass Plate

Traditional Japanese crafts with seasonal fish theme

Everyone thinks it's about the cherry blossoms (and they certainly are the most prominent) but viewing nature in all its forms is a time-honored Japanese pastime and goes back to the days of the Kyoto imperial court 1,000 years ago, when the aristocrats would spend their days composing poetry about the beauty of each season. And when it comes to summer, together with the hydrangeas and the sunflowers, there is one more seasonal element that the Japanese love to view, and this is goldfish. Like the ones in the Goldfish Pond Glass Plate!

The three red fish in the Goldfish Pond Glass Plate aren't real, of course, but master glass artist Tomomi Matsuo has painted them in so beautifully and realistically that if you rotate the plate under the light, you could swear they're actually swimming in it! The plate is 12.5 x 14.5 x 2.5 cm (4.9 x 5.7 x 1") and like all Japanese artisanal creations, you can use it as an everyday item or treat it like a piece of art for decorating your home.
