You would expect it would be tofu: the Japanese are famous (infamous?) for not being great fans of dairy and using soy and everything that comes from it as their main source of protein. But perhaps this was what made them create something like the Cheese Puzzle: maybe for some Japanese, this is one of the rare opportunities to see a big chunk of cheese in front of them without having to go to a very expensive deli and pay an obscene amount of money for it!
To be fair, the cheese in the Cheese Puzzle looks more like a chunk of cheese from a classic American cartoon: its color is bright yellow, it has a lot of holes, and it's triangular as if it was just cut from a wheel. Don't let its shape fool you, though: putting together the 10 slices isn't as easy as it looks, so you might need to consult the illustrated assembly guide a couple of times before you have the whole 10 x 7 x 7.5 cm (3.9 x 2.7 x 2.9") finished!
