Akabeko Squeeze Toy
Sound-making version of Fukushima traditional folk toy
Having started as a legend in the Aizu area of Fukushima Prefecture, the akabeko red cow evolved into the symbol of the area, one of the first toys its children still get when they are very small and a good health amulet, owing to the belief that its presence helped keep away smallpox in the late 16th century. The Akabeko Squeeze Toy does not claim it can do the same but is a good way to introduce your children to one of Japan's most popular folk toys!
Unlike the regular akabeko, the Akabeko Squeeze Toy is not made of papier-mâché but of PVC. This makes it squeezable, something your children will certainly appreciate. What they will enjoy even more, though, is that every time they squeeze, the toy makes a special sound that you will have a hard time describing but your children will want to hear again and again. And since it's just 15 x 5 x 9 cm (5.9 x 2 x 3.5"), it fits nicely in the hand of any child over six!
