Spirited Away Porcelain Spoon

Studio Ghibli anime tableware

Despite what you may read on the internet, the inspiration for the ghost town that is the location for Yubaba's bathhouse in Hayao Miyazaki's classic anime Spirited Away is not a small town in Taiwan! Everyone who has been around Tokyo or any other big city in Japan will immediately recognize the yokocho alleys around the train stations, filled with restaurants that are little bigger than food stalls. And these eateries serve their soups with porcelain spoons called renge, just like this Spirited Away Porcelain Spoon!

Made in Gifu Prefecture, a region famed for its ceramics, the Spirited Away Porcelain Spoon is a perfectly shaped renge, good for any bowl of ramen noodles or plate of fried rice that are the staples of these small restaurants. On its inner side, it features Haku in his dragon form plus two crests of Yubaba's public bathhouse with the character for "abura" (oil) that is part of its name. And on the back of the spoon, a beautiful red seal with the film's title in Japanese and the legend of Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli!
