Nikken Sakamoto Ryoma Samurai Sword Scissors

Samurai katana design cutting blades

He only lived 31 years but Sakamoto Ryoma was so involved in the politics of the time when Japan was emerging from the samurai era into the modern period that he has become something of a national hero. Having been killed in a sword fight like a real samurai certainly contributed to his legendary status too! He is here commemorated with the Nikken Sakamoto Ryoma Samurai Sword Scissors, a fine pair of scissors made in Seki, the Japanese capital of cutlery since the 13th century, when "cutlery" meant samurai swords!

In a black matte scabbard (or saya, in katana speak) and with a deep red sageo cord, the Nikken Sakamoto Ryoma Samurai Sword Scissors certainly look the part. When you take them out, you can see they are inscribed with the characters for Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, the name of the real sword that Sakamoto Ryoma used and also the name of one of the characters in the popular game Touken Ranbu. At 180 mm (7.1") long and weighing just 66 g (2.3 oz), this is a very practical pair of scissors and a tribute to one of Japan's most famous samurai!
