Tsuyuki Woodworking Inlay Tissue Holder Koyosegi

Traditional woodwork tissue box cover

What's so special about the Tsuyuki Woodworking Inlay Tissue Holder Koyosegi, you might ask. It's just a wooden box that makes a regular cardboard tissue box look better (which is a pretty low bar, since most tissue boxes are rather bland). It features various classic Japanese patterns like the Yoshiwara-tsunagi chain or the asanoha hexagon hemp leaf. But other than that, it's just a 13.5 x 27 x 9 cm (5.3 x 10.6 x 3.5") cover, right?

Actually, no and the work inlay in its name should be the clue: the images on the Tsuyuki Woodworking Inlay Tissue Holder Koyosegi aren't drawings but an elaborate network of small pieces of wood of various colors, put together by hand using a marquetry technique called yosegi-zaiku. And this technique is a centuries-old specialty of Hakone, an area in Kanagawa Prefecture near Mount Fuji. Other than house your box of tissues, this holder is a superb example of traditional Japanese woodwork that transforms whatever space it is in.
