Spirited Away No-Face Soy Sauce Plate

Studio Ghibli anime character serveware

On looks alone, No-Face isn't the scariest thing you have seen in Japanese anime: there certainly are much, much scarier creatures out there. What makes the particular character stand out is that in the colorful world of Spirited Away, the classic 2001 anime from Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, is that he's black and white and, well, faceless, so viewers project their own fears onto him. This proved to be a stroke of genius on Miyazaki's part, since it made No-Face incredibly popular. Hence the existence of something as original as the Spirited Away No-Face Soy Sauce Plate!

At first glance, the Spirited Away No-Face Soy Sauce Plate seems like just a small (approximately 55 x 80 x 25 mm, 2.2 x 3.1 x 1"), deepish porcelain plate with some carvings. But pour a little soy sauce in it and you'll see No-Face's mask vividly come to life, staring at you from the plate's bottom: the carvings form the lines on the spirit's mask and while they aren't well discernible when the plate is empty, they become much more pronounced when you pour any dark liquid in it. Give your next sushi dinner a touch of anime with this beautiful item from Studio Ghibli's high-quality merchandise collection!
