Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Mountain Cherry Butter Dish

Traditional woodworking butter storage box

No trip to Nara, Japan's old capital from around a century before Kyoto, is complete without a visit to Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten: housed in a classic townhouse, this store has been around since 1716, first as a store and workshop for hemp fabric, a Nara traditional craft, and later as a one-stop shop for superb craftsmanship from all over the country. And just one look at the Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Mountain Cherry Butter Dish makes clear what they mean by superb craftsmanship: it’s hard to think that this object could be improved in any way!

Made from the wood of the yamazakura tree (literally, mountain cherry tree), the Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten Mountain Cherry Butter Dish has been shaped in a way that fits perfectly with its lid and keeps your butter from melting, even when you have it on the table. As a matter of fact, it also keeps the butter insulated so it won't dry when in the refrigerator! The only thing that stands out is the small opening for the butter knife (not included), but that too is so harmoniously integrated into the overall shape that it actually adds to it. A unique object that will transform your breakfast table!
